Man with No Name was published in 2016 by JournalStone as the first in a planned series of Nanashi novellas. The story follows Nanashi, an enforcer for the Heron Clan, a yakuza crime family. When he is tasked with kidnapping a pro wrestler affiliated with a rival syndicate, the job seems routine. But the target, Muzaki, carries a secret that pulls Nanashi into something far worse than a turf dispute.
The novella sits at the intersection of noir crime fiction and cosmic horror, a combination Barron has made his specialty. His prose captures the murky, dangerous atmosphere of Japan’s criminal underworld while building toward the kind of supernatural dread that runs through all his best work. The book also includes a bonus novella, Blood and Stardust. JournalStone originally planned additional Nanashi novellas, though this remains the only entry in the series.
