The Nameless Detective series is primarily the work of Bill Pronzini, Marcia Muller’s husband, though Muller co-authored Double (1984) and contributed to the series in other ways. The series follows an unnamed San Francisco private investigator from The Snatch (1971) through Endgame (2017), making it one of the longest-running PI series in American mystery fiction.

The detective is a pulp fiction collector, an everyman investigator who ages in real time across the decades. The early books are classic 1970s PI fiction, while later entries deal with the detective’s health problems, changing relationships, and the evolution of San Francisco. Pronzini’s prose is clean and direct, and the nameless gimmick never feels like a gimmick after the first few books. The series also includes several short story collections and novellas that fill in gaps between the novels.
