The Mystique series gave Brian K. Vaughan a chance to write a villain-focused espionage comic within the Marvel universe. The five volumes follow the shapeshifting mutant on covert missions, using her ability to assume any appearance for spy work. Dead Drop Gorgeous (2004), Tinker Tailor Mutant Spy (2004), Unnatural (2005), and Quiet (2005) make up the run.
The espionage angle played to Vaughan’s strengths as a writer who likes political and moral ambiguity. The series treated Mystique as a complex character rather than a straightforward villain, which fit with Vaughan’s approach to morally grey protagonists in his creator-owned work.
