The Mycroft Holmes series takes a minor character from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories and builds full mystery novels around him. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, working with co-author Anna Waterhouse, portrays Mycroft as a brilliant young man before he became the sedentary government official of Doyle’s later stories. The series pairs Mycroft with Cyrus Douglas, a Trinidadian friend who brings a different perspective to their investigations.
Six entries published between 1997 and 2019 include novels, comic adaptations, and standalone mysteries. The books combine Victorian mystery conventions with Abdul-Jabbar’s interest in diversity and representation, making Cyrus Douglas a full partner in Mycroft’s adventures rather than a sidekick.
