The Mucker series follows Billy Byrne, a tough from Chicago’s streets, through three adventure novels. The Mucker (1914) sends Byrne on a sea voyage that leads to a lost island, where he begins to change from a brute into something better. The Return of the Mucker (1916) continues his story, and The Oakdale Affair (1917) rounds out the trilogy.
The series shows a different side of Burroughs from his more famous jungle and planetary adventures, with a working-class American protagonist whose character arc drives the story.
