The Mordecai Young trilogy is among Maggie Shayne’s darkest work. The series follows the fallout from a dangerous cult led by the charismatic and ruthless Mordecai Young. Starting with Thicker Than Water, the books track survivors and investigators as they try to escape his influence and bring him to justice. Each book ups the tension, with Colder than Ice and Darker than Midnight pushing the characters further into danger.
These are grittier and more suspenseful than much of Shayne’s paranormal romance catalog. The emphasis here is on psychological tension and the long reach of a manipulative villain, wrapped around romantic subplots that give the stories emotional stakes beyond the crime elements.
