The Montana books are among Max Brand’s most entertaining Westerns. Montana, also called the Kid, is a likable rogue who gets by on quickness and cleverness rather than raw toughness. Montana Rides!, published in 1933, drops him into a range war where he has to use all his skills to survive. The follow-up, Montana Rides Again, came out the next year and continues the character’s adventures.
These two novels show Brand working at a confident, fast clip. The Montana character is lighter in tone than some of Brand’s more brooding heroes like Dan Barry or Silvertip, and the books have an energy and humor that make them good entry points for readers new to Brand’s Western fiction.
