Monster is Walter Dean Myers’ most acclaimed work, first published in 1999. The original novel tells the story of Steve Harmon, a teen on trial for his alleged role in a robbery that resulted in a killing. Steve processes his experience by writing it as a movie screenplay, and the novel alternates between his script and his private journal.
The book won the first Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature and has been adapted into a graphic novel and a film. The series expanded to include additional editions and related works, making Monster one of the most enduring and widely taught young adult novels of its era.
