The Mommy series consists of two thrillers by Max Allan Collins, based on his own independent films. Mommy (1997) and Mommy’s Day (1998) follow a mother whose outward respectability hides a willingness to kill anyone who threatens her daughter’s success or her own image.
Collins wrote, directed, and produced both Mommy films before adapting them into novels. The movies starred Patty McCormack, who had gained fame decades earlier as the child star of The Bad Seed. Collins saw a thematic connection between the two properties and built on it.
The books are quick reads that blend domestic suspense with a darker streak of horror. They represent one of the more unusual corners of Collins’ large body of work, sitting at the intersection of his fiction writing and his filmmaking career.
