Mixologists and Pirates is Frost Kay’s steampunk-flavored fantasy series. Published between 2018 and 2020, the seven books are set in a world where alchemist mixologists create powerful potions and elixirs while pirate crews sail (and sometimes fly) across dangerous waters. The books are named after the colorful substances at the heart of the story: Amber Vial, Emerald Bane, Scarlet Venom, Cyan Toxin, Onyx Elixir, and Indigo Alloy.
The setting is a departure from Kay’s other series. Instead of the medieval-style kingdoms of The Aermian Feuds or the fairy tale forests of The Twisted Kingdoms, Mixologists and Pirates gives readers airships, pirate captains, and alchemical laboratories. The adventure is faster-paced and lighter in tone, though Kay still works in romance and danger throughout.
The series shares some overlap with the Aliens and Alchemists series, with certain titles appearing in both. Readers who enjoy the pirate and alchemy elements can explore both series, though Mixologists and Pirates keeps its focus more squarely on the swashbuckling side of things.
