The Miss Cornelia Van Gorder books include Mary Roberts Rinehart’s most famous work. The Circular Staircase (1908) introduced the spinster sleuth Cornelia Van Gorder and became a bestseller that established Rinehart as a major mystery writer. The novel’s combination of a spooky old house, a determined female protagonist, and a twisting plot set the template for American gothic mystery.
The series also includes The Man in Lower Ten (1909), one of the first American mystery novels set on a train, and The Bat (1926), the stage play adaptation of The Circular Staircase. Rinehart’s early novels hold a significant place in mystery history, predating the golden age of detective fiction that would follow in the 1920s and 1930s.
