The Mindhunter series by John E. Douglas begins with his 1995 memoir of the same name. Mindhunter recounts Douglas’s career in the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, where he helped create the modern practice of criminal profiling by interviewing imprisoned serial killers and studying their behavior patterns. The book became a bestseller and was adapted into a Netflix series in 2017.
Journey Into Darkness, published in 1997, continues where Mindhunter left off. It covers additional cases from Douglas’s career and goes deeper into the methods he used to track and understand violent criminals. Together, the two books offer a comprehensive account of how criminal profiling developed at the FBI.
