Mike McCormack’s four standalone novels span from 1998 to 2024, each showing his interest in formal experimentation. Crowe’s Requiem (1998) was his debut, followed by Notes from a Coma (2005), a novel about an Eastern European orphan in Ireland that uses footnotes and documentary fragments. Solar Bones (2016) is his masterpiece, a single-sentence novel narrated by a dead engineer on All Souls’ Day.
This Plague of Souls (2024) is his most recent novel and continues the formal ambition of Solar Bones. McCormack publishes infrequently, but each novel represents a significant step in his thinking about what fiction can do. His work rewards patient, attentive readers who appreciate prose as craft.
