Mike McCormack has published two short story collections. Getting It in the Head (1996) was his first published book and won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. The stories are dark and strange, blending realism with surreal and speculative elements. Forensic Songs (2012) appeared sixteen years later and shows the same willingness to experiment with form.
McCormack’s short fiction has the same intensity as his novels, compressed into tighter spaces. The two collections bookend the first half of his career and show how his style developed between his debut and the breakthrough of Solar Bones.
