The Michelle Mason series by Lisa Brackmann begins with Getaway (2012), in which Michelle, a recently widowed woman from Los Angeles, travels to Puerto Vallarta to escape her problems. Instead, she meets a charming pilot and stumbles into a world of drug trafficking, covert operations, and violence. The book moves fast, and Michelle’s status as an ordinary person in way over her head gives it a different feel from Brackmann’s Ellie McEnroe novels.
Go-Between (2016) picks up with Michelle in Humboldt County, California, where she has settled into a quieter life running a restaurant. That peace ends when a former CIA contact pressures her into babysitting a wealthy socialite whose charity is being used to launder money. The series traces the long consequences of a single bad vacation, as Michelle finds that once you have been useful to intelligence agencies, they never quite let you go.
