The Best Horror of the Year is an annual anthology series edited by Ellen Datlow, one of the most respected editors in horror fiction. The series began in 2009 and has continued through at least Volume 17 in 2025, with Michael Marshall Smith appearing in 18 volumes.
His frequent inclusion across nearly every volume of the series speaks to the consistent quality of his short horror fiction. The Best of the Best Horror of the Year (2018) collects highlights from the first ten volumes and also features his work.
