The Metas series by Kelly Meding takes the superhero genre and grounds it in a world where having powers is not glamorous. Fifteen years before the series begins, a catastrophic battle between heroes (Rangers) and villains (Banes) left the previous generation destroyed and their children stripped of their abilities. In Trance (2011), those children are now adults when their powers suddenly return, forcing them to figure out what kind of heroes they want to be.
The series ran for five books between 2011 and 2013, including Trance, MetaWars: Fight for the Future, Changeling, Tempest, and Chimera. Each book introduces new threats and complications as the team struggles to hold together while dealing with both external enemies and the emotional weight of their inherited responsibilities.
Meding brings the same gritty, fast-paced style she used in her Dreg City urban fantasy books to a superhero setting. The Metas series will appeal to readers who enjoy superhero fiction that focuses more on the human cost of power than on spectacle.
