The Mellingham series is set in a fictional small town on the New England coast that draws on Susan Oleksiw’s own upbringing in the region. Chief of Police Joe Silva is a former big-city cop who traded his old life for the slower pace of Mellingham, only to find that the town’s polite surface hides plenty of trouble underneath.
Oleksiw has described the series as an effort to capture a particular kind of New England community life before it disappeared. The seven books, beginning with Murder in Mellingham (1993) and ending with Come About for Murder (2016), cover everything from family secrets and local rivalries to sailing accidents and cold-case investigations. Each novel stands on its own while building a richer picture of Mellingham and its residents over more than two decades of storytelling.
