Melanie McGrath’s non-fiction spans two decades and covers subjects from London’s East End to the Canadian Arctic. Silvertown is a memoir about her grandmother’s life in industrial east London, while Hopping follows hop-picking families in Kent. The Long Exile tells the story of Inuit families forcibly relocated by the Canadian government in the 1950s, a subject that also informed her fiction.
Her earlier books, Motel Nirvana and Hard, Soft and Wet, explore American counterculture and the early digital age respectively. Pie and Mash Down the Roman Road, her most recent non-fiction title from 2018, returns to London’s East End. McGrath writes non-fiction with a novelist’s eye for character and place.
