The Medieval Murderers series is a collaborative project involving a rotating group of historical mystery writers, including Susanna Gregory, Bernard Knight, Michael Jecks, Philip Gooden, and Ian Morson, among others. The group has been writing together since 2005, and each book uses a shared structure: a single artifact, location, or theme connects a sequence of novellas set across different historical periods, with each author contributing a chapter set in the era of their own series.
The Tainted Relic (2005) launched the project by tracing a supposedly cursed religious relic from medieval England through the centuries. Later books follow similar patterns: The Sacred Stone, Sword of Shame, and House of Shadows each take an object or place and show how it touches different lives across time. The format lets each writer use their area of expertise (Gregory contributes chapters set in medieval Cambridge featuring Matthew Bartholomew) while the connecting thread gives each volume a sense of continuity. The series ran through The Deadliest Sin in 2014.
