Maya Angelou’s work appears in a wide range of multi-author anthologies. I Am the Darker Brother (1968), one of her earliest anthology credits, collects African American poetry. Growing Up in the South (1991) gathers writing about Southern childhood, a subject Angelou knew firsthand from her time in Stamps, Arkansas.
Later anthologies cover different aspects of her interests: Writing Women’s Lives (1994) and Becoming Myself (2006) focus on women’s experiences, while 40 Model Essays (2005) includes her work as an example of strong essay writing. Made With Love (2012) is a Meals On Wheels charity cookbook. Writers: Their Lives and Works (2018) appeared after her death, reflecting her continued presence in literary anthologies.
