Matthew Lopez’s three original plays span fifteen years of work. The Whipping Man (2009), set among freed slaves and a Confederate soldier at the end of the Civil War, was one of the most widely produced new plays of its era. The Inheritance (2020) is a two-part play about multiple generations of gay men in New York, inspired by E.M. Forster’s Howards End. It won the Tony Award for Best Play.
Reverberation (2024) is Lopez’s most recent work for the stage. Each play stands on its own and explores different subjects and time periods.
