The Matteo Alacran series consists of “The House of the Scorpion” (2002) and its sequel “The Lord of Opium” (2013). The first book won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and a Newbery Honor, and it remains one of the most respected young adult science fiction novels of the twenty-first century.
The story follows Matt Alacran, a clone of El Patron, the elderly ruler of Opium, a narco-state between the US and Mexico. In this world, clones are typically treated as subhuman, but El Patron has kept Matt intact for his own purposes. “The Lord of Opium” picks up Matt’s story as he inherits El Patron’s empire and must decide what to do with it. Farmer uses the science fiction premise to explore questions about identity, power, and what it means to be human.
