Matt Goldman’s four standalone novels were published between 2022 and 2025, all separate from his Nils Shapiro detective series. Carolina Moonset (2022) is set in a coastal North Carolina retirement community and follows a son dealing with his father’s dementia alongside a murder mystery. It was a departure from Goldman’s Minneapolis setting.
A Good Family (2023) and Still Waters (2024) continued his standalone run, each featuring different protagonists in self-contained mystery plots. The Murder Show (2025) is the most recent, and like the others it can be read without any familiarity with Goldman’s other work.
All four books reflect Goldman’s crime fiction approach – character-driven plots, dry wit, and Midwestern or American regional settings. They are a good entry point for readers curious about Goldman’s writing who want a complete, single-volume experience.
