The Mary Sutter series spans two novels set in nineteenth-century Albany, New York. In My Name Is Mary Sutter (2010), the title character leaves her midwifery practice and travels to Washington, D.C., during the Civil War, determined to work as a surgeon despite being refused at every turn. The novel won the Michael Shaara Prize and reached the New York Times bestseller list.
Winter Sisters (2018) picks up Mary’s story in 1879 Albany. A devastating blizzard hits the city, and two newly orphaned girls disappear. Dr. Sutter leads the search and, when the truth of what happened to the girls comes out, she finds herself fighting Albany’s most powerful citizens. Robin Oliveira’s nursing background in critical care shows in the medical detail of both books.
