Mary Roberts Rinehart’s non-fiction output includes war reporting, travel narratives, and autobiography. Kings, Queens and Pawns (1915) records her experiences as one of the first American correspondents at the Western Front during World War I. She traveled through Belgium and France, interviewing soldiers and observing conditions that she reported to an American audience still debating involvement in the war.
Her travel books, including Through Glacier Park (1916) and Nomad’s Land (1926), document adventures in the American West. My Story (1931) is her autobiography, covering her rise from struggling nurse to best-selling author. The non-fiction shows a different side of Rinehart from her mystery novels, revealing the adventurous temperament that also informed her fiction.
