Mary Jean Chan is a Hong Kong-born poet, lecturer, and editor. Their debut poetry collection Fleche won the 2019 Costa Book Award for Poetry. Chan competed in fencing locally and internationally for Hong Kong as a young adult, and the sport informs much of their writing.
Beyond their own collections, Chan has contributed to and edited anthologies. Islands Are But Mountains (2019) brings together poetry connected to place and geography. 100 Queer Poems (2022) collects work from a range of LGBTQ+ poets. Chan’s editorial work reflects the same themes found in their own poetry: identity, queerness, family, and the experience of navigating different cultures and languages.
