Mary Doria Russell’s three standalone novels each focus on a different moment in history. A Thread of Grace (2005) follows Jewish refugees in Italy during the final months of World War II. Dreamers of the Day (2008) is narrated by a woman who witnesses the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference where Churchill, T.E. Lawrence, and others redrew the map of the Middle East.
The Women of the Copper Country (2019) tells the story of Annie Clements, a real historical figure who led a copper miners’ strike in Michigan in 1913. All three novels reflect Russell’s interest in how ordinary people respond to large historical forces.
