Mark Girland is one of Chase’s more distinctive creations: a former CIA agent who takes on jobs that sit somewhere between espionage and crime fiction. This Is for Real (1965) introduces the character, and the series continues with Have This One on Me (1967), The Whiff of Money (1958), and You Have Yourself a Deal (1980).
The Girland books gave Chase a way to work in the spy thriller genre that was booming in the 1960s while keeping his own dark, cynical tone. The result is a series that feels more like crime fiction with an intelligence backdrop than a traditional espionage series.
