Mark Billingham’s standalone novels offer different perspectives from his Tom Thorne series. In the Dark (2008), Rush of Blood (2012), and Die of Shame (2016) each explore crime and psychological tension through unique setups and characters.
Rabbit Hole (2021), set in a psychiatric hospital, was particularly well received. Knight School (1998) was his earliest published work. These standalones show Billingham’s versatility, moving away from the police procedural format of the Thorne books into more varied thriller territory.
