Woman, Life, Freedom (2023) is Marjane Satrapi’s most recent graphic work, created in response to the protest movement that swept Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died after being detained by Iran’s morality police for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly. Her death sparked months of nationwide protests under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.”
Satrapi organized this collaborative project, bringing together contributions from multiple artists and writers to document the movement through comics and illustrations. The book connects the 2022 protests to the longer history of women’s resistance in Iran, a subject Satrapi has been writing about since Persepolis. It serves as both a work of political solidarity and a visual record of a historic moment in Iranian society.
