Marjane Satrapi has written two children’s picture books that bring her distinctive illustration style to stories for young readers. Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon (2001), her first published book, tells the story of a girl named Marie who cuts out the moon to keep monsters away from her bedroom, only to discover unexpected consequences.
The Sigh (2004) draws on Persian fairy tale traditions to tell the story of a girl who follows a mysterious sigh to a strange land. Both books feature the bold, graphic visual style that Satrapi is known for, adapted into a more colorful and playful register than her black-and-white adult works. They offer a very different side of Satrapi’s creative range from the politically charged material of Persepolis.
