Marius’ Mules is S.J.A. Turney’s flagship series and one of the longest-running Roman military fiction sagas in publication. It follows Marcus Falerius Fronto, a legate commanding the Tenth Legion under Julius Caesar, from the opening campaigns of the Gallic Wars in 58 BC through seventeen books of conquest, revolt, civil war, and political intrigue.
The series draws heavily on Caesar’s own commentaries (De Bello Gallico), using them as a framework while filling in the human stories behind the military campaigns. Fronto is a soldier first and a politician never, which puts him at odds with the increasingly ambitious Caesar as the series progresses. The books move from Gaul to Britain, Egypt, Spain, and finally Rome itself.
Turney began writing the first book in 2003 and self-published it in 2009. It became a bestseller and established his reputation in the Roman historical fiction community. The series has continued for over fifteen years, making it one of the most sustained treatments of the late Roman Republic in modern fiction.
