Mario Puzo’s non-fiction offers a behind-the-scenes look at the man behind The Godfather. The Godfather Papers and Other Confessions, published in 1972 during the height of Godfather mania, collects Puzo’s essays and reflections on his sudden fame, the film adaptation, and his life as a writer. Inside Las Vegas (1977) explores the casino world that would also inform his novel Fools Die.
Me and Mario (2018), written by a close associate, provides a more personal account of Puzo’s life and personality. Combined with The Making of the Godfather (2013), these non-fiction works give readers a fuller picture of Puzo beyond his fiction. They are most rewarding for readers who have already read The Godfather and want to understand the circumstances that produced one of American fiction’s most famous novels.
