The Maria Kallio series by Leena Lehtolainen spans thirteen books published between 1993 and 2010. It is one of Finland’s best-known detective fiction series, following police officer Maria Kallio from her first murder case through a career investigating crimes in and around Helsinki.
My First Murder (1993) introduces Kallio as she investigates a death among a group of friends. The series develops her career through cases involving domestic violence (Her Enemy), winter tragedies (Snow Woman), figure skating circles (Death Spiral), and missing young women (Where Have All the Young Girls Gone). Several books in the series were originally published in Finnish and later translated into English. The series is often cited alongside other Nordic noir authors as an example of Scandinavian crime fiction’s focus on social issues alongside traditional detective work.
