Margaret Murray continues M.J. Trow’s practice of building mystery series around real historical figures with unconventional biographies. Murray herself was a remarkable person — an Egyptologist who excavated in the field when women doing so was rare, and later an anthropologist whose theories about prehistoric religion were influential and disputed in equal measure. She lived to 100, giving Trow a wide chronological window to work in.
Four Thousand Days and Breaking the Circle, published in 2022 and 2023, place Murray in the role of detective. Trow’s research background makes him well suited to handling a character whose real life was already so steeped in historical scholarship. The series is short at two books but gives a flavor of a less familiar historical period than his Victorian or Elizabethan work.
