Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan follows Norse demigod Magnus Chase. The Sword of Summer (2015) begins when Magnus dies and arrives at Hotel Valhalla, setting off a quest to find the Sword of Summer before Ragnarok. The Hammer of Thor (2016) and The Ship of the Dead (2017) continue the story. 9 From the Nine Worlds (2018) is a companion collection of short stories.
Riordan built this series on Norse mythology the way he used Greek myths for Percy Jackson and Egyptian myths for the Kane Chronicles. Magnus is a Boston teenager who discovers he is the son of a Norse god, and each book sends him on a quest tied to preventing the end of the world. The Hammer of Thor introduced Alex Fierro, one of the first major gender-fluid characters in mainstream middle-grade fantasy.
The series can be read on its own, but it shares a universe with Riordan’s other mythology books. Characters from the Percy Jackson series make brief appearances, and readers who have been through Riordan’s Greek and Egyptian books will catch the connections. 9 From the Nine Worlds collects short stories told from the perspectives of Magnus’s companions.
