The Magic Ex Libris series by Jim C. Hines is built on an irresistible premise: libriomancers can reach into books and pull objects from the pages into the real world. Want a lightsaber? Reach into a Star Wars novel. Need a healing potion? Grab one from a fantasy book. The catch is that the more popular the book, the easier the magic works, and some things should never be pulled into reality.
Isaac Vainio, the protagonist, works for a secret organization founded by Johannes Gutenberg himself. Starting with Libriomancer (2012), the series runs through Codex Born, Unbound, and Revisionary, plus the shorter works Chupacabra’s Song and Imprinted. It is a love letter to books and reading wrapped in an action-packed urban fantasy.
