Stephen Penner’s Maggie Devereaux series is four books long, starting with Scottish Rite in 2011 and ending with Last Rite in 2013. The first three books all came out in 2011, so Penner was clearly productive early on with this character. The “Rite” naming pattern in Scottish Rite, Blood Rite, and Last Rite ties those books together, while Highland Fling takes a slightly different turn in between.
Readers should start with Scottish Rite and work forward in publication order. Maggie Devereaux’s story builds across the four books, and skipping ahead would mean missing how things develop from one entry to the next. The two-year gap before Last Rite in 2013 suggests it wraps up storylines that began in the earlier trilogy of 2011 releases.
