L.M. Montgomery’s standalone novels show a different side of her writing from the well-known series. The Blue Castle (1926) is set in Muskoka, Ontario, and follows Valancy Stirling, a 29-year-old woman trapped in a suffocating family who breaks free after learning she may be dying. It is her only novel with an adult protagonist and has gained a large modern readership.
Kilmeny of the Orchard (1910) is a quiet romance, Magic for Marigold (1925) follows a girl growing up in a colorful Island family, A Tangled Web (1931) is a comedy about a family inheritance dispute, and Jane of Lantern Hill (1937) tells the story of a girl who discovers her father is alive and reconnects with him during a summer on PEI.
