The Lucy Clayburn trilogy began with Strangers in 2016 and follows an undercover police officer whose assignments take her into increasingly dangerous situations. Unlike the DS Heckenburg books, which focus on investigation from the police side, the Lucy Clayburn series puts its protagonist deep inside criminal worlds where discovery means death.
The three books, Strangers, Shadows, and Stolen, form a connected story arc. Lucy’s character develops under the pressure of living double lives, and the psychological toll of her work becomes as much a threat as the criminals she is trying to bring down. Paul Finch uses the undercover setting to create sustained tension that runs through each book from start to finish.
