Luck is one of many Western duologies that Max Brand produced during his long career. The first book, published in 1926, deals with the role of chance and fortune in the lives of men on the frontier. Brand had a recurring interest in the idea of luck as almost a living force in his characters’ lives, and this short series puts that theme front and center.
Crossroads, the second book, was published in 1997, more than fifty years after Brand’s death. Like many of his posthumous publications, it was assembled from manuscripts that had been sitting in archives. The two books together are a minor but enjoyable piece of Brand’s enormous body of work.
