The Lt. Stephen Mayhew Mystery series was among the earliest work Dolores Hitchens published under her D.B. Olsen pen name. The two novels, “The Clue in the Clay” (1938) and “Death Cuts a Silhouette” (1939), feature a police lieutenant solving crimes in a style typical of Golden Age detective fiction.
These books predate Hitchens’ more famous Rachel Murdock mysteries and show her early development as a mystery writer. While the Mayhew series did not continue beyond two entries, it laid the groundwork for the longer and more popular series she would go on to write.
