Low Town drops readers into a fantasy city’s worst neighborhood, where a disgraced former spy called the Warden scrapes by dealing a drug called pixie’s breath. When dead children start turning up, the Warden gets drawn into an investigation that puts him at odds with the authorities, criminal underworld, and sorcerous threats alike. The series blends classic noir storytelling with secondary-world fantasy, and Polansky writes his antihero with a dry, mean wit.
The sequels, Tomorrow, the Killing and She Who Waits, expand the Warden’s backstory and raise the stakes. The Czech-language editions (included here) brought the series to a wider European readership. Fans of Glen Cook’s Garrett P.I. books or Alex Marshall’s Crimson Empire will find a similar mix of crime fiction and fantasy here.
