Love Comes Softly launched Janette Oke’s career and helped establish Christian fiction as a commercial genre. The first book (1979) follows Marty, a young frontier widow who agrees to a marriage of convenience with Clark Davis, a widower who needs help raising his daughter. What begins as a practical arrangement grows into a genuine love story.
The series spans eight books published between 1979 and 1989, following the Davis family across generations through “Love’s” titled sequels — Love’s Enduring Promise, Love’s Long Journey, Love’s Abiding Joy, and onward. The Hallmark Channel adapted several of the novels into popular television movies.
