Louise Fein’s standalone novels each take on a different moment in 20th century history. Daughter of the Reich / People Like Us (2020) is set in Nazi Germany and follows a young woman torn between her family’s loyalty to the regime and her love for a Jewish friend. The Hidden Child (2021) looks at the eugenics movement in 1920s England, a period when forced sterilization was considered respectable science.
The London Bookshop Affair (2024) shifts to the Cold War, using a London bookshop as the setting for a story of espionage and personal risk. Book of Forbidden Words (2026) continues Fein’s pattern of finding dramatic stories in overlooked historical moments. Each novel works independently, but together they form a body of work focused on the gap between public morality and private conscience.
