Louann Brizendine’s three non-fiction books each take on a different aspect of brain science. The Female Brain (2006) examines how hormones and neural pathways shape women’s emotional and cognitive lives from childhood through old age. The Male Brain (2009) does the same for men, looking at everything from aggression to parenting instincts through a neurological lens.
The Upgrade (2021) narrows the focus to what happens to women’s brains during and after menopause, a topic that had received relatively little popular science attention before its publication. All three books translate clinical research into readable prose, and they reflect Brizendine’s decades of experience treating patients alongside her interest in making neuroscience accessible to non-specialists.
