The Loretta Kovacs series is lighter in tone than Bruno’s Gibbons and Tozzi books, though it shares the same willingness to let crime fiction get genuinely strange. Loretta works in the Parole Violators Search Unit — known as the Jump Squad — tracking bail-jumpers whose escapes lead her into increasingly ridiculous situations.
Devil’s Food, the first book, was nominated for an Anthony Award and establishes the series’ comedic edge: Loretta goes undercover at a Florida fat farm to find an embezzler who has stolen from a biker gang’s drug money. The three books published between 1997 and 2000 are well-paced crime capers with a protagonist who’s hard not to root for.
