The London Fairy Tales series takes familiar fairy tale plots and transplants them into Regency-era England. Published between 2012 and 2014, the ten books give each classic story a historical romance treatment, complete with ballrooms, titled gentlemen, and the social rules of the period. Upon a Midnight Dream kicked off the series with a Sleeping Beauty retelling.
Van Dyken clearly enjoys playing with the source material, keeping enough of the original fairy tale structure to be recognizable while building full romance plots around them. The series is a good pick for readers who want historical romance with a playful twist.
