The Lon Tobyn Chronicle was David B. Coe’s entry into published fantasy. The trilogy begins with Children of Amarid (1997), set in a land where mages derive their power from psychic bonds with birds of prey. When a mysterious enemy begins attacking settlements, a young mage must uncover the truth behind the assaults while navigating the politics of the mage order.
The Outlanders (1998) and Eagle-Sage (2000) expand the conflict beyond Tobyn-Ser’s borders and raise the stakes as the source of the threat becomes clearer. The series established many of the themes Coe would return to throughout his career: magic with costs, political complexity, and characters forced to make difficult choices.
